SQA 6 Highers

Humzah Razzaq

You might remember that a few weeks ago we celebrated the success of 18 pupils who had achieved nine A grades in their National 5s. Next Friday at Prize Giving we will celebrate the success of pupils who achieved five A grades at Higher. They will receive ‘Colours’ and the right to have the prestigious red braiding on their blazer pocket.

However, today I would like us to celebrate the success of some pupils who sat and excelled in six Highers. You might ask, why sit six Highers? You only need five to get into the best Universities in the world so why bother with six? Well these students demonstrated a passion and interest in six subjects and couldn’t choose between them. They wanted to further their knowledge in these subjects because they loved learning in these academic fields. They demonstrated significant commitment to learning by taking on six Highers.

I would like to mark their achievement.

·         Erin Campbell for Highers in Chemistry, English, Human Biology, Mathematics, Physics and Spanish

·         Sofia Gregori for Highers in Chemistry, English, History, Human Biology, Italian and Mathematics

·         Ekatherina Demidova for Highers in Economics, English, French, Mathematics, Physics and Russian.

UKMT Mathematical Circle

Last week, Monica Nelson and I went to Strathclyde University for a maths event organised by the UK Maths Trust.

We were met at 8:15 at the school gates by Mr. Jamieson, who walked us down to the University.

When we reached the room at the uni where the event was being held, we were introduced to Alan, a member of the UKMT, who was part of the event. Our first activity was doing a number crossword do to together while waiting for other pupils to arrive.

On the first day we also met Dr. O’Hagan, a former maths teacher at our school.

We were introduced to interesting maths concepts over the course of these days days such as using 16 base number systems, 2 base number systems such as binary, and a wide range of mind bending puzzles.

We had three breaks in the day- one after each session and we had 4 session in each day.

My favourite session was about using mathematics to control a disease breakout, using maths to see where would be the best place to put a vaccination programme in the event of a disease- we had a very fun activity using ping pong balls to symbolise humans and the session was very well explained.

We met different people our age, but also qualified mathematicians and lecturers that we learned a lot from. The event enriched our maths knowledge and we would like to thank Mr.Jamieson and the UKMT for making it possible.

Thank You.
