St Aloysius' College Schola

St Aloysius’ College Schola Cantorum is a unique and diverse choral programme. We have the distinct pleasure of working with and singing the rich tapestry of Catholic choral music, spanning over the last 1000 years. Situated next to St Aloysius’ Church, the Schola Cantorum work weekly to sing most Sunday’s at Mass, both at St Aloysius’ College and out into the Diocese, as part of an Outreach programme to provide other churches with musical excellence.

The Schola Programme also dedicates time to the performance of secular music making, such as that of concerts (recently in the SSE Hydro and Glasgow Concert Hall), masterclasses (including a workshop with Ben Parry in September 2017 and David Briggs in 2018), tours (including both national and international trips) and providing musical entertainment at College functions and events.

The Schola programme is run and overseen by James Kealey, Director of Choral Music, and supported by Ann Archibald, Head of Voice and Hugh Reid, Organist of the College. Currently, the Schlola Programme consists of four choirs; the Schola Puerorum, Schola Puellarum, Schola Nova and the Schola Cantorum.

The Schola Puerorum is a junior boys’ choir, running from Primary 4 through to Senior 1, and entry is by a simple audition. The choir sings roughly six Sunday Masses a year, and sings a wide range of music. The choir rehearses twice weekly and during the 2017-18 year, the Schola Puerorum will sing for Mass at St Aloysius’ Church and at St Andrew’s, Bearsden, as well as taking part in a concert at Glasgow Concert Hall in December. This year will also see the Schola Puerorum singing Choral Evensong at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.

The Schola Puellarum is a junior girls’ choir, running from Primary 4 through to Senior 1, and entry is by a simple audition. The choir sings roughly six Sunday Masses a year, and sings a wide range of music. The choir rehearses twice weekly and during the 2017-18 year, the Schola Puerorum will sing for Mass at St Aloysius’ Church and at St Brigid’s, Toryglen, as well as taking part in a concert at Glasgow Concert Hall in December. This year will also see the Schola Puerorum singing Choral Evensong at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.

The Schola Nova is a non-auditioned choir run by the Head of Voice, Ann Archibald, and sings one Mass per term at St Aloysius’ College, as well as participating in other College events. The choir acts as a bridge between the junior choirs and the Schola Cantorum This year, during the 2017-18 season, the Schola Nova will work with Ben Parry at the Schola Workshop in September, and will perform at special events over Christmas.

The Schola Cantorum is the College’s elite Chamber Choir. This auditioned choir is made up of 24 senior school students, who take an active role in the life of the College. The Schola Cantorum is an SATB choir that sings a broad range of music, bot secular and sacred. This year will see the choir perform at both Sunday Masses and School Masses at St Aloysius’ Church, as well as singing services at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral during the Cathedral Choirs' Vacation, and Choral Evensong at Carlisle Cathedral in early 2018.
