COMPUTING

“Everyone should know how to program a computer because it teaches you how to think.” Steve Jobs

Computer science is ubiquitous in our modern society, affecting all aspects of our daily lives. In the Computing Science department, we aim to develop our young people as computational thinkers and problem solvers. From the Junior School to Advanced Higher level in S6, pupils have the opportunity to code and to create.

Our teachers work in partnership with colleagues in the Junior School to deliver computing science lessons to a number of primary levels. In S1 and S2, all pupils have 2 periods of Computing Science a week before having the option in S3 and S4 to study National 5 Computing Science then Higher and Advanced Higher in S5 and S6 respectively. In our three computing suites we have modern PCs with a huge range of software to allow our pupils to develop their practical abilities.

Our department have close links with the University of Glasgow and a number of technology firms. In recent years pupils have undertaken work experience placements and successfully applied for sponsorship from Adobe, internships with Skyscanner and modern apprenticeships with JP Morgan. This year, pupils have successfully applied to study Computing Science at Abertay, Strathclyde, Caledonian, Edinburgh, St Andrews and Glasgow universities.

As well as regular lunch-time and after-school revision sessions, pupils have the chance to join our Minecraft club and the new physical computing club where pupils can learn to code using Micro:bit, Arduino, Raspberry Pi and other devices.
