Ski trip sledging by Mark Ravichandran, Jude Graham and John Johnston

Ski trip sledging by Mark Ravichandran, Jude Graham and John Johnston

Junior School pupils and staff had the time of their lives in the Italian Alps last week on the annual St Aloysius’ College Junior School Ski Trip, hitting the slopes under breath-taking mountain views and perfect blue-sky conditions in Folgaria.

Mark Ravichandran, Jude Graham and John Johnston reflect on their time away and their experience of being on holiday for the first time without their parents:

We arrived at Milan airport, and everyone was very excited to go skiing. When we got to our hotel, we took our bags upstairs and went into our rooms - our room was gigantic, it had 2 floors! The following morning we had breakfast and prepared for our first day of skiing.

To save some time in the morning, we sorted our ski boots the night before. We were all split into different groups based on experience, black (beginners), yellow (intermediate I), red (intermediate II), green (advanced I) and then orange (advanced II) which we were in.

Our instructor for the first day was named Filippo- he was a really good teacher. That day we went up to the black slope where an international race was taking place and we went down it! To finish off day 1, we went to visit to an Italian church for Sunday Mass- this was very interesting.

On Wednesday we did our usual 5 hours of skiing. Our group did lots of different runs that day, including the Snow Park which was definitely our favourite part of the entire trip! After the Snow Park we went for some lunch, which was on top of one of the mountains called Stella d’Italia and it was delicious. When we finished skiing that night, we got ready for a night of shopping.

On the final day of the ski trip, we found out that our flight was cancelled as a result of the airport workers' strike so we got to stay in Italy for an extra day. Dr Brady said we could spend the day sledging (which was actually very fun) so we took a mini train to a small sledging slope and got split into different teams and got twelve turns each!

After we had finished the sledging we went to a cafe to get some food where we had a choice of either chicken nuggets, a hot dog or a hamburger. After we finished lunch, we went back to the hotel and enjoyed our last night.

Most of us hadn't been away abroad without our parents before but we can all say, without a doubt, that this was a trip that we will remember for a long time to come.
