Ramadan Mubarak! S2s Ali-Abbas and Armaan-Abbas have written a blog post speaking about this important time in the Islamic calendar:
Today, Muslims around the world will be celebrating the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a time of fasting, spiritual reflection, and increased devotion. During this month, Muslims fast from dawn until dusk, refraining from food and drink. Fasting is one of the most important deeds to carry out in Islam and is seen as a way to purify the soul and increase one's spiritual connection with Allah. Ramadan is also believed to be the month in which the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him).
Similarly, in Catholicism, fasting is a form of spiritual discipline that involves abstaining from food or limiting one's intake for a certain period of time. It is seen as a way to deepen one's relationship with God and increase self-discipline. Both Ramadan and Catholic fasting involve a period of sacrifice followed by a time of spiritual renewal and can be seen as acts of devotion and self-improvement.
One of the most telling passages in which fasting is mentioned is Matthew 6:16, where Jesus is teaching His disciples basic principles of godly living. When speaking on fasting, He begins with, “When you fast,”
"O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may develop God-consciousness." (Quran 2:183)
