Aloysian Chemists Discover Inspiration in the Labs of Glasgow University

St Aloysius’ College was pleased to give twelve of the College’s most dedicated Chemistry pupils the chance to spend a rewarding day at Glasgow University for the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Chemistry at Work day 2016.

Twelve S2 pupils attended the Chemistry at Work day at Glasgow University where they carried out their own practical experiments before attending an engaging lecture from Dr Daniel Price, a senior chemistry lecturer at Glasgow University.

Using the Chemistry Labs of Glasgow University, the Aloysians enjoyed a challenging morning as they analysed the chemical make-up of four different compounds in search of their identities.

Chemistry lecturer Dr Daniel Price then got an excited reaction out of the pupils as he demonstrated the effects of liquid nitrogen on different materials at a temperature of minus 196 Degrees Celsius.

It is hoped that the Chemistry at Work day will help to ignite even greater interest in Chemistry amongst the Aloysians who attended so that they might aspire to further study and a career in the field in the future.

Perhaps some of the pupils may also be selected to represent the College in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s annual Top of the Bench competition for S2 – S4 pupils in the not too distant future.

This year’s St Aloysius’ College Top of the Bench team consisted of Ciara Spratt, Finn Stockwell, Erin Campbell and Aidan Murray who were victorious in the West of Scotland competition against 11 other schools, earning the chance to attend the UK final in Loughborough recently.

Mr Anderson, the College’s Head of Chemistry, said the pupils performed extremely well in Loughborough and represented the College brilliantly as they competed against 32 other schools from the UK and abroad.
