Aloysian Piper Bags National Awards

Personal Excellence

Aloysian bag-piper, Jack Smith of S1, blew the judges away at this year’s Scottish Pipers Association Juvenile Competition, earning a clean-sweep of first place prizes at the national bag-piping competition.

Jack performed in the B-Grade category and was awarded with first place prizes for both Strathspey and Reel Category and the March Category.

The S1 Aloysian was also presented with the Jock Spiers Cup which is awarded to the Scottish Pipers’ Association’s Most Promising Piper.

For the past two years, Jack has received bag-piping tuition here at the College from Margaret Dunn who, as well as being a teacher at the National Piping Centre, is one of the Music Department’s specialist tutors.

Reflecting on her pupil's success, Margaret Dunn said,

“Jack has worked very hard in the run up to this competition. He is always keen and eager to learn in his lessons and he has arrived at a place where he is technically very accomplished for someone so young. Hence, why he is competitively successful. With continued hard work, I see a very bright future for Jack.”

Jack’s father was also thrilled with is son’s achievement and said he was ‘very fortunate to have access to such high quality tuition at St Aloysius’ College’.
