On Tuesday a team of 4 intrepid mathematicians accompanied by our Mathematics captain, travelled to Fettes College for the Enterprising Mathematics Competition. The team had a very enjoyable day, placing 11th out of 22 teams.
In the first round, the teams had to build a variety of origami shapes, potentially culminating in a massive icosahedron, worth 50 points. Ever the tacticians, our team elected to build combinations of cubes and tetrahedra, scoring a fair number of points for their completed shapes. The next round was the team round, where a selection of 10 questions are answered by the team collaboratively. Our team showed great individual leadership and worked together very well. We excelled in the stations round (scoring 95%!), which looked at, amongst other things, the mathematics behind the classic game of TETRIS.
Our Mathematics captain joined the sixth-formers from Fettes in helping to organise the event, and had a very enjoyable time socialising and talking maths!
Well done to everyone who took part!
