Junior School Science Festival Success

Junior School Science Festival Success

Last week the Junior School hosted their first ever Science Festival. This was a celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. The children participated in animation workshops from Make It Happen, learned about the importance of staying healthy with Glasgow Science Centre’s touring show, and selected their own projects throughout the week.

We launched marshmallows with medieval catapults, the Kindergarten welcomed Dr. Jobson and the Labrats for a Science show all about Cohesion, we made Rube Goldberg machines, we designed and tested Earthquake proof homes and became BUBBLEOLOGISTS. We launched flying machines, visited Mr. Harkins in computing to learn how to program BBC microbit computers, and still had time to help the European Space Agency design robots to help with clearing space debris from Earth’s orbit.

Part of our Science Festival was our annual Dr. Morag McDonald Science Fair, which has been a staple of Primary 7 life for over 20 years. This year was a huge success, and according to Junior School science teacher Mr. Steven McClintock, we saw some experiments and projects we had never seen before! While it was a tough decision - the judges had to pick some winners for their outstanding contributions and hard work:

Cody H. – How do chicks breathe inside their egg?

Eloise H. – Stop Go Glove (invention – working prototype)

Emily F. – Should you be scared of turbulence when flying?

Well done to everyone who took part. Mr. McClintock also commented: "Our whole community was enthused by the week, and I think we have a few scientists and engineers of the future in our midst. I am looking forward to the next SciFest already!"
