Personal Excellence
OA Emma Canning, Class of 2015, has been selected for the U20 Great Britain Athletics Team following a personal best, silver medal winning performance at the England Athletics Indoor Combined Events Championships in Sheffield.
Emma, who is currently studying Law at the University of Strathclyde, is an ‘all-rounder’ when it comes to athletics and competes in Pentathlon Combined Events which includes the 800m, 60m Hurdles, Long Jump, High Jump and Shot Putt.
The Old Aloysian was up against a very competitive field at the England Athletics Combined Event Indoor Championships in Sheffield but managed to win the silver medal by achieving her personal best Pentathlon score of 3680, which has now been confirmed as the 3rd best of all time by a Scottish U20 woman.
Emma had to work hard for her silver medal winning score against a very competitive field, and when she needed a good performance in her crucial final long jump, the Old Aloysian managed to achieve her best ever Pentathlon distance of 5.74m to win the long jump and give herself the chance for silver going into the final 800m.
Reflecting on her determined performance, Emma’s father told the College,
“It was the critical moment in the day for Emma and she responded with her best ever pentathlon Long Jump”
“I think St Aloysius’ sports department can say they have played their part in giving her that competitive spirit & belief at the critical times in big competitions – she just loves it when the ‘chips are down’.“
St Aloysius’ College wishes Emma the very best of luck for February’s Indoor Combined Events Match in Spain where she will represent Great Britain against Spain, France and the Czech Republic.
