Care and Respect

Every year we try to make the progression from Junior to Senior School as happy and enjoyable as possible. This year, we started an S1/S6 Buddy system where every first-year pupil is paired up with a sixth-year pupil to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Christopher Morris (S1) and Hannah Martin (S6) reflect on the experience so far.

Christopher Morris S1

Last Thursday, myself and my fellow classmates had a great opportunity to meet with our S6 buddies who will mentor and guide us throughout our first year in Senior School.  We all met in the Convent Chapel, during form time where Miss Lawrie (Head of S6) and Mrs Hartshorne (Head of S1) explained to us the roles that our S6 Buddies would play.  We were then all introduced to our buddies and we spend some time getting to know each other and telling each other more about ourselves.  My buddy's name is Daniel and he was really kind and welcoming.  We talked about our hobbies and interests, our likes and dislikes, places we had visited and much more.  As my class left the Convent Chapel we all agreed that our buddies were very friendly and helpful.  This is a new initiative just introduced to S1 this year and I believe this will have a positive impact on our school life.  My experience of meeting Daniel was very reassuring as I now know I always have someone in the school to ask questions of and for help and guidance.

Hannah Martin S6

Since the beginning of S6 we, as a year, have wanted to do something to help the new first years settle in and make their transition from primary to secondary as smooth as possible, as we recognised that due to the number of changes that occur, first year is one of the most difficult years of school life.  So when Ms Lawrie proposed the new Buddy System, we were all very eager to get involved.  Each sixth year has been paired up with an S1 pupil who throughout the year should be able to come to the older pupil with any questions or concerns that they may not feel comfortable discussing with a staff member. I really enjoyed meeting my buddy for the first time, and after getting to know them a bit better, I am looking forward to seeing how they progress in the next year, and helping them to make life in the College as great as it can be in any way I can.
