Three St Aloysius Players Selected for Scotland Rugby Squad
St Aloysius is delighted to announce that three players from the College have been selected for the Scotland U16 Rugby Squad. Nick McAllister (S5), Andrew Hughes (S4), and Adam Scott (S4) will travel to Wales to play in their first match as part of the Scotland squad in April.
Speaking to the boys, they described their delight on hearing that they had been selected: “It was more of a shock at first” described Nick: “But playing for your country makes you feel good”, he continued. The news comes after a fantastic season for the U16 boys team, in which they have gone unbeaten.
Andrew and Adam had both played for Glasgow before, and were selected off the back of strong performances at a regional level. Nick on the other hand, was scouted and invited to training camps after his stellar performance at the Scottish Cup Final, which was won by St Aloysius in December 2016.
So far, the boys have attended two training days at Murrayfield, and are looking forward to a series of weekend camps in early April. The aim of these is to build strong team bonds in time for a six-day festival in Wales, where they will play fixtures against Welsh sides Dragons, Scarlets and RGC.
The philosophy of the festival is to develop the individual and team performance, with the players being assessed not only at this festival but at all of their previous training camps.
Bryan Easson, Head Coach of the Scotland U16 Reds, cited the importance of challenging these players and placing them in a high-performance environment.
Mr McKenzie, Director of Rugby, added: “My role was to create a centre of excellence, and to get more boys in regional and national teams. It is very satisfying from a personal and school point of view to see these guys getting national honours.” He continued: “Places in the Scotland squad are just rewards for the boys, after they put in the hard work over a number of years”.
Nick, Andrew and Adam would like to thank Mr Urquhart and Mr McKenzie for their support throughout the season.
