Clavius Recognised in 100 Best Scottish Buildings of the Century

The Clavius Building, home of Maths, Science and Technology at St Aloysius’ College has been shortlisted as one of the top 100 Scottish Buildings of the past Century.

The modern Clavius Building was built in 2003 and is home to College’s Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Computing classrooms, and also offers pastoral and social space for Senior School pupils.

Designed by Elder and Cannon Architects, it has been chosen by judges as one of the best 100 buildings constructed in Scotland over the past 100 years.

The Senior School building has previously been the winner of the RIAS Award in 2004 thanks to its ‘good strong urban presence which makes it a solid, functional, memorable building’.

The Clavius includes 25 classrooms, many of which are found on the 5-story classroom block to the north of the building, which is fully glazed to give each classroom considerable light and expansive views.

The College’s Head of Chemistry, Mr Anderson, feels the building’s features help to create a positive learning environment for pupils,

“The Clavius Building provides the Chemistry Department with four spacious and well-equipped laboratories which afford excellent view over the Campsies. Pupils have plenty of natural light flooding into the labs and it makes for a great learning & teaching environment.”

The shortlist of the top Scottish 100 buildings of the past century includes buildings from 1916 until the present day.

The winner will be selected by public vote which forms part of the RIAS Festival of Architecture, taking place all around Scotland from March to October next year.
