Reflections on the Boston Jesuit Latin Colloquium

Reflections on the Boston Jesuit Latin Colloquium

Our Head of Classics, Ann McLeod, recently represented St Aloysius’ College at the Jesuit Latin Colloquium, held at Boston College High School – a school with which our College has partnered up with on various projects in the past.

Ann not only represented the College, but was also the only non-American school rep present, meaning we represented the entire Jesuit Province on our visit. This is the first gathering of its kind since COVID, and it was great to see what links us with other schools across the globe, and learn about their different approaches when it comes to learning.

The delegates all had one thing in common – a passion for the teaching of Latin, a subject that has its roots seeded deep in ancient history and can provide a rich understanding of classical literature, something which to this day continues to inspire contemporary authors. Presentations on the day included talks on this subject, to social justice in the Classics classroom.

Ann added;

“The programme was excellently constructed to combine sessions which specifically addressed the role of teaching Latin in the context of a Jesuit establishment, as well as wider areas of teaching authors and topics in innovative ways. Every session was excellent.

“[the sessions] absolutely struck a chord within our own context at St Aloysius’, where the Classics Department has worked hard to provide the opportunity for all pupils to have exposure to Classics. What is more, we are constantly striving to ensure that the materials we produce and the teaching methods we employ are meeting the needs of all pupils.”
